Urban infrastructure connects all domains of city life; objects, facilities, capacities, flows, possibilities, social relationships, expertise, places to live and ways of getting by. What cities are able to hold together, how they do so, and whether these operations are inclusive are crucial considerations. Interdisciplinary, innovative research which brings together the expertise and methods of different communities of knowledge and practice is needed to inform policy thinking and interventions aimed at making cities more liveable, especially in the Global South where stresses related to rapid urbanisation are particularly pronounced. Urban infrastructure also sits at the interface between top-down (official-government) initiated imperatives and bottom-up responses to the challenges that arise in surviving shifting conditions in the everyday life of communities as cities expand. The Fellowships will support researchers at risk to continue their research in the UK for up to two years. The primary benefit of the fellowships is to Ukraine by building and maintaining research capacity that would have otherwise been disrupted or overwhelmed by the conflict. The programme is receiving £3 million of funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), plus £8.88m from transition funding as the Global Challenges Research Fund closes and the new BEIS fund starts. The Nuffield Foundation, an independent charitable trust, is contributing £0.5 million towards the scheme. The first priority of the Programme will be as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has exposed Ukraine-based researchers and their dependents to direct threat. The Programme aims to complement the work already being done by UK institutions, including through their existing cooperation with Cara as members of Cara Universities Network, offering fellowship awards of up to two years to researchers at risk with funding of circa £37,000 per year.
