The aim of the JRF initiative is to construct a pipeline in the UK and the developing world for interdisciplinary researchers focused on tackling development challenges in a sustainable manner. The aims of the programme of Frontiers of Development symposia are: to facilitate the transfer of new techniques and approaches across different fields; to encourage collaborative work which fulfils key international development objectives; to promote international development and cross-disciplinary thinking among the next generation of research leaders; and to support the deepening of partnerships between the UK National Academies and agencies and NGOs based in the Global South. COVID-19 By forming and strengthening relationships between academia and industry, the programme aims to ensure that the higher education system in sub-Saharan Africa produces engineers with the skills and knowledge required to meet the needs of industry, tackle local challenges, address the engineering skills shortage in sub-Saharan Africa, and to showcase engineering’s role in driving economic development in the region. To maximise the impact of this collaboration, the programme is implemented through a ‘hub and spoke’ model. The hub universities are funded to undertake bilateral secondments with local industry partners, and in turn, share their experiences with a larger number of spoke universities through a series of knowledge sharing workshops, secondments, reports and other collaborative activities. The event brings together a select group of around 60 emerging UK and global engineering and international development leaders from industry and academia to discuss pioneering technical work and cutting-edge research for international development from a diversity of engineering fields. Seed funding is available to progress some of the best ideas coming out of the event. COVID-19 The goal of the two-and-a-half day symposia is to introduce these outstanding engineers and international development workers (0-20 years post-doc, or equivalent experience in industry) to each other, and through this interaction facilitate collaboration in engineering for development, the transfer of new techniques and approaches across disciplinary boundaries and the establishment of contacts among the next generation of engineering leaders and beyond. We intend that participants will establish networks that will have a lasting impact throughout their careers. In order to encourage this, at the end of each symposium participants will have the opportunity to apply for seed funding to help build on collaborative partnerships established at the event.
