The Newton Research Collaboration Programme aims to develop science and innovation partnerships between UK and developing countries to promote their economic development and social welfare. Exchanges can be either one- or two-way in direction, and should form part of a collaborative research project, incorporating visits and dissemination activities. More broadly, it is clear that engineers, through advances in technology, have a major role to play in addressing key global challenges, such as sustainability, clean energy, food security, and climate change resilience. The Industry Academia Partnership Programme aims to build strong and structured partnerships between higher education institutions and locally based industry, focussed around bilateral academic and industry exchanges. These placements improve university curricula and enhance knowledge transfer into industry to enhance prospects for long term economic development within the partner country. Selected researchers benefit from focussed short term training and long term support through access to expert mentors and international networks. The primary objective of the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) programme is to build the capacity of researchers for entrepreneurship and commercialisation of their research. The programme is aimed primarily at researchers within the partner country who are in the process of developing a business proposition for their innovation. All business ideas are assessed based upon their potential for social and economic development impact. A select cohort of researchers from that country will benefit from focussed support including a focussed period of training in the UK in aspects of commercialisation and technology entrepreneurship and access to expert mentors from the UK. In the short term they will develop a commercialisation plan for their innovation. In the long term they will benefit from on-going support at their home institution, and access to an international network of peer innovators and mentors, in taking their commercialisation plan forward. The programme has the following primary aims: (i) To build the capacity for innovation and technology entrepreneurship in the partner country, to support its long-term social welfare and economic development; (ii) To establish international networks of innovators and technology entrepreneurs centred around The Academy’s Enterprise Hub. As a critical interface in the delivery of new technologies and innovations, a strong partnership between academia and industry is vital for economic development and growth. In an era of rapid technological advancement, it is also essential that engineering education keeps up with the ever changing demands of industry, to ensure that graduates have the skills and knowledge required by future employers. More broadly, it is clear that engineers, through advances in technology, have a major role to play in addressing key global challenges, such as sustainability, clean energy, food security, and climate change resilience. The Industry Academia Partnership Programme aims to build strong and structured partnerships between higher education institutions and locally based industry, focussed around bilateral academic and industry exchanges. These placements improve university curricula and enhance knowledge transfer into industry to enhance prospects for long term economic development within the partner country. This is done by: (i) Promote the sharing of knowledge and creation of mutually beneficial partnerships between HEIs and industry, to inform current and future engineering research and facilitate its impact in practice; (ii) Enhance teaching curricula and methods within HEIs to promote practice led, industrially relevant learning, to improve engineering skills among graduates and ensure they meet the needs of local industry; (iii) Enhance teaching curricula and methods to promote innovation focused learning and technology entrepreneurship, to promote innovation capacity among engineering graduates; (iv) Promote, more broadly, international sharing of knowledge and best practice in engineering education and support for innovation between HEIs in the UK and Newton partner countries. The UK-China Urban Flooding Research Impact programme aims to: - Build strategic linkages between researchers, public sector and industry in China and UK to research the intersection amongst - and combination of - weather systems and pluvial, fluvial and coastal factors to urban flooding and enhance the impact and uptake of its applications in China and in developing countries globally. - Promote sharing of inter-disciplinary knowledge/ best practice between academia, government and industry to improve decision making under uncertainty, and promote co-definition of urban flooding problems to inform future research, innovation and policy collaborations in China and in developing countries globally. - Improve research-policy-industry interface to help systemically foster deeper engagement amongst actors in the innovation eco-systems of both countries and create different models of cross-sector engagement on pressing policy issues on urban flooding prevention for wider sharing and adoption in China and in developing countries globally.
